Living in Sherburn-in-Elmet and Surrounding Villages

    Semi-rural living

Sherburn-in-Elmet is home to almost 7,000 residents. With York and Hull accessible by a direct train from the village’s rail station, and Leeds an easy journey from the village’s second station at South Milford, this is a great option for commuters. It’s also popular with families looking for a smaller community in which to live. And there is definitely a sense of community here, with multiple local organisations running classes, events and activities throughout the year.

A particular strength of Sherburn-inElmet is its facilities. Due to a recent programme of regeneration, there are plenty of cafes, pubs, and restaurants to enjoy here, plus useful shops and supermarkets all located in the centre of the village. Sherburn’s immediate surroundings are also appealing, with several smaller villages and beautiful countryside making this a great option for semi-rural living with easy access to nearby towns and cities.

"Sherburn was one of the main suppliers of teasel (a cone-like flower with a thorny stem) to the wool industry in Yorkshire."

The History of Sherburn-in-Elmet and Surrounding Villages

The village of Sherburn-in-Elmet is believed to be Roman in origin. In its early days, it was notable for its large church, which was constructed in the 1100s and is now a Grade I listed building. The village has a bloody history, and played a significant part in numerous battles, including the English Civil War.

Industrially, Sherburn has a varied and interesting past. In the 1700s, the village opened several inns, taking advantage of the numerous guests travelling through with mail and passengers, en-route to York. And, in the 1800s, the building of Sherburn-in-Elmet’s two train stations (Sherburn-inElmet and South Milford) brought with them new residents, keen to benefit from this new mode of transport.

Sherburn went on to become significant in the manufacturing of textiles, and more recently in the aviation industry, with the Blackburn Aircraft Company formerly constructing and testing out planes in the village. The village is now home to one of the largest industrial sites in the area, with companies such as Eddie Stobart and Sainsbury’s represented.
